NEW YORK PREMIERE
Inviting viewers into a conversation about the distinct and important differences between gender, sex and sexuality, “Kings, Queens & In-Betweens” makes a complex subject approachable for mainstream audiences. Set in Columbus, Ohio, and using the door of drag as an entryway, the documentary presents the spectrum of male, female and trans experience while bringing light to issues of gender and identity–-all with humor, big hair and duct tape.
Within the context of a battleground “swing” state, drag troupes–which include midwest marvels Nina West, The Reverend Roy Rogers, and Dr. Cool Ethan–gear up for main stage performances, dedicate themselves to extensive rehearsals/planning, and put their own money into this form of creative expression, community involvement, and political activism.
NewFest has selected KQIB for their 2017 inaugural event, with a special panel discussion after the film with performers Dr. Cool Ethan, Sile Singleton/Luster Dela Virgion, Kari Kerning (current Miss Barracuda), producer Jennifer Burton, and director Gabrielle (that’s me!). See the invite attached and spread the word. Now is such an important time to gather people to discuss where we are and what we can do to move progress forward.
